Tool Description
This online tool encodes a URL or list of URLs into a format that can be securely sent via the Internet. It replaces unsecure symbols like spaces, punctuation signs, and all non-Latin symbols with special sequences that consist of % followed by two hexadecimal numbers.
Tool Options Description
- Encode URL Delimiters: enables the encoding of reserved URL characters (like ?, &, #, =, /, :, @). If you need to encode the whole link, it should be disabled. If you encode a text that will go into link parameters, it should be enabled. Default value: enabled.
- Encode Lines Separately: if enabled, each line is considered as a separate URL, the new line character is not encoded, and the result is printed as a list of URLs. Default value: disabled.
- Use + for Spaces: whether spaces should be replaced by a + instead of a %20. Default value: disabled.
What is URL Encoding
The URL encoding (also known as percent-encoding) is a technique of converting characters in a URL into a format that is secure to use.
A URL can have a limited number of symbols like Latin letters, digits, and some special characters. All other symbols should be encoded in such a way as not to break the link.
For example, the & character is used to separate parameters in a URL. If one of your parameters uses that character, it breaks the logic of parameter parsing. Because of that, it should be encoded with allowed characters.
All symbols that cannot be used are replaced with % and two hexadecimal numbers corresponding to the ASCII code of that character.
When to Use URL Encoding
This tool is needed every time you are working with links that have some other characters that the allowed set has. For instance:
- Preparing links for mailings.
- Creating Reliable UTM Tags with Special Characters in Marketing.
- Using redirects in links. Since a link has another link in it that has its own sets of delimiter characters, the server can be confused.
- You test an API and send JSON in your link or try to check the security of a server sending encoded scripts.
