Tool Description
This is an online URL decoder that will help you to get the original text from its encrypted version. It can also be used for query parameters and text fragments. Write, paste from the clipboard, or import from a file your URL or list of URLs into the input text field, and the result will appear immediately in the output text field.
Tool Options Description
- Decode URL Delimiters: whether or not to decode characters that are reserved in the URL format (such as :, /, ;, ?, &, =, #, @, +). When it is enabled, it is useful for decoding query parameters and encoded plain text. Otherwise, it works with the input as a whole URL and keeps the encoded structure. Default value: enabled.
- Recursive Decoding: should decoding be performed several times (maximum 16). For cases when a link was encoded more than one time. Default value: disabled.
- Ignore Errors: if enabled, the invalid input will still produce the output with everything that can be decoded without showing an error. Default value: disabled.
- Decode + as Space: enables / disables interpreting the + sign as an encoded space. Default value: disabled.
What is URL Decoding
URL decoding (or percent-decoding) is the process of converting special characters in a URL back to their original, readable form.
Since not all symbols are allowed in the URL, it is being encoded for safe further usage. Every restricted character is replaced with a % sign and the hexadecimal code of the character. After that, a URL is not readable for humans.
To get the original form, you need to decode the URL link. Thus, encoding and decoding of the link are two opposite actions.
When to Use URL Decoding
An online URL decoder is needed when you want to read the encoded link, part of a link (query parameters), or just encoded simple text. So, decode a link online in cases like this:
- You are a web developer and work with API requests.
- A server stores paths and requests in logs in encoded format.
- An SEO specialist and marketer needs link cleaning (for reports or social media publishing), UTM tag analysis, or redirect checking (link within link).
- Analysis of suspicious links that can contain malicious scripts or phishing addresses.
